Media Literacy Student – Mariam Kalandadze

Mariam Kalandadze lives in a small house on the mountain slope in the village Khidistavi, 7 kilometers away from Chokhatauri. The road to her home is not asphalted and public transport does not reach there.

It has been almost a year, since Mariam walks several kilometers to get in the minibus and arrive at newspaper Guria News newsroom in the center of Chokhatauri. Mariam is Youth Media Literacy student and she writes articles for Guria News youth edition Bellow 21. She is 17 years old and her articles mainly focus on youth problems in the region.

“I love my village, but everyday life is not diverse. We don’t have cinemas, theaters, any entertainment places or interesting events here,” Maryam says. Her typical day looks like this – school in the morning, newsroom in the afternoon and if mother is late at home, taking care of housework in the evening.

“If I’m late, Mariam cooks bread or meal, feeds paltry and cleans house,” says Lia Dvalishvili, Mariam’s mother. Lia is against her daughters choice about journalism. “I don’t want her to become a journalist, because it may be difficult for woman, leading the family life and journalism doesn’t match. But she wants it so much, Mariam does her best to become a journalist and if she succeeds in her life I will be happy too,” says Mariam’s mother.
